Engines, Technology, and the Future: Odonatum's Exclusive Look Inside MTU!

Last week, our Student Club had an absolute highlight on the semester schedule: an exclusive factory tour at MTU. Anyone who’s always wanted to know what the future of aviation looks like (and just how huge an aircraft engine actually is up close) got their money’s worth here.

A Journey Through Time at the MTU Museum

Our day kicked off with a tour of the company’s own museum. From the historic beginnings all the way to modern high-tech engines, we were able to trace the entire evolution of aircraft propulsion up close. It’s truly fascinating to see the technological leaps that have driven the industry’s development over the decades.

Right in the thick of it: The factory tour

Afterward, we swapped theory for practice and headed into the production halls. When you see firsthand the incredible precision with which these gigantic components are manufactured, you immediately gain a whole new level of respect for the feat of engineering. The combination of massive machines and precision work down to the millimeter was definitely impressive.

Networking Over Lunch

After so much information, our stomachs were growling, so we headed to lunch. Quite spontaneously, we had the opportunity to chat with several employees from a wide variety of departments. In a super relaxed atmosphere, we were able to ask all our questions—whether about day-to-day work, specific career opportunities, or little “nerdy” details from the production process.

A Look into the Future: Flying Fuel Cells

The perfect finale was an exciting technical presentation by an employee on “Flying Fuel Cells.” Hydrogen and fuel cells are currently *the* hot topic when it comes to zero-emission flight. Hearing about the specific research the teams at MTU are currently conducting and how they’re tackling the challenges really inspired us all over again.

A huge thank you to the entire MTU team and especially to Viola Schöll for the invitation, the in-depth insights, and the amazing day! We definitely headed back to campus with our minds buzzing and a huge dose of motivation.
