Odonatum Gingerbread Competition and Christmas Break

December 20, 2025 by Marlon Müller

Merry Christmas everyone,

It is that time of the year and to celebrate the occasion and have a fun leadup to the christmas break we decided to host a Dune themed Gingerbread competition.

We had 3 teams and a whole lot of baking compounds, competing in this championship. The goal was for every one of our teams to create their own Gingerbread dough and from that build the most impressive construct.

While all teams started of strong with only mild competition around the use of our limited scales and a lot of questional backing soda dosing it quickly became apparent that not everyone had the same abilitys when it came to backing.

Our team, I have to admit a little bias here, had by far the best tasting dough, even if it might not have been the most traditional (closer to butter cookies). Our main differentiator was that we didn't go all in with the backing soda as some others did.

While Team 2's arguably well thought out recreation of the arakeen palace (DUNE) did look quite impressiv, it was only marginaly edible steming from a mix of backing powder and very extensive baking.

Team 1 meanwhile didn't quite get the message about the Dune theming, while also struggling with the structural integrity. Their recreation of Thors hammer at least tasted pretty well.

I saved the best for last, Team 3 (Fabian, Killian, Walter and Me[Marlon]) created a Diorama featuring the scene from DUNE I where the worm eats a spice harvester due to Harkonnen sabotage. The Diorama includes both the worm looking out of the sand, the Harvester in dismay aswell as a little mini Ornithopter on a stand flying away (I don't get why people see a palm there)

After we finished our Creations and tried a number of methodes to get to very inconcolusive voting results, including polling random bystanders about dough edibility, we decided we had all won the competition and split up the remaining gingerbread between the remaining participants.

While there are certainly areas that can be improvde for next year, we remain quite optimistic that we can establish this event as an annual tradition...

Merry Christmas and a Happy new year everyone!
